A Recipe For . . .

For our final year at university we are fundraising for our end of year show which will be held in London, and to do this we are making a funky little magazine called A Recipe For . . .  in which lots of amazing illustrators on my course will be creating a recipe. We are hoping to sell lots of copies and raise lots of money! I have tied mine into the nautical nonsense brief (see below) as I can't get octopi out of my head. Here is my recipe . . . 

Nautical Nonsense

This is some work I have made for the This Is... competition which (if chosen) will be exhibited at Sixty Million Postcards in Bournemouth. The theme this month is Nautical Nonsense so for this I have been looking at seaside pop art, the bright colours of arcade games, candy floss, lolly pops, ice creams and flashing lights all mixed in with the traditional seaside stuff! The whole image is the landscape one, but as it has to be submitted portrait I've split it in two and made two illustrations!

Day trip to the Tank Museum

As we are now in the final year of uni I think it is time to get the regular updates going again! I've chosen to do my project on war again, so here are a few things I have done in the past week to get my creative juices flowing.

I went to the Tank Museum in Bovington on Thursday and drew all the symbols on the different tanks. I like the way they all seem to have their own identity, making them all different, not just ordinary tanks, and then I put them all into Photoshop to make one big tank!

My topic is still very broad at the moment but I like the idea of looking at the identity of soldiers, I'm hoping I will make or see something that will stimulate something amazing :)

  

Transformers

This is a painting I recently finished for my boyfriend as he loves Transformers!

Rainbows

I saw the most amazing rainbow the other day whilst I was driving up to London so just had to draw it!

Butterflies

I've been having lots of fun drawing butterflies in a silhouette style as I love the effect it makes. I have been using the designs to make greetings cards and note paper and am going to play around with the colours to make some even better designs! After making the fathers day card I thought I could make an insect alphabet, so thats my next project!

Divergence Final

Here is the final for the divergence brief. It is meant to be interactive, so you would hover the mouse over the people yourself to see the pictures but I can't do that on here! So for this I have recorded the screen while I rollover the icons.

The main concept behind it is to show how people all begin the same (which is why there is a grid of identical people), then when you scroll over each person a different image pops, portraying the effect war has on individuals. I have finished it with a video of burning candles to represent all the victims of war, going back to the idea that we are all the same.

Divergence Animation First Attempt!

Here is the first upload of the animation, there is still a lot to do but this is the general idea. The images are going to be positioned better within the grid and when the images pop up the man that it is associated with goes red! Anyway, more to come.

Digital Revolution - Divergence

Thought I should update with what I'm doing for the latest project! Our brief is to make an animation on the theme of divergence so I have been making mine on the theme of war. It is really about war in general, not so much specific wars and should show how war affects different people. I am going to be doing a series of images which run through very quickly. I have tried to upload it  but it doesnt want to work! So I will try again tomorrow. For now, here is a series of images I took at the Keep Military museum in Dorchester. The whole animation is going to be made up of photos, my own ones from museums and other places and from internet/books etc.

The four bottom images are my favourite as they are still images taken from a video, I think they have come out really well, and the blurriness captures that individual moment. Basically the opposite of animation!

Illustration's for Cosmo's Quest

This is a book cover I have done for a film student. The film (Cosmo's Quest) is about a spaceship which has on board artificial intelligence called Dynamica. Dynamica lands on Earth meeting a boy called Cosmo. She flies him up to space and shows him how mankind has damaged the Earth. He then has to choose three aliens who will help him to save the planet. This is the cover for the written story that will accompany the film as well as the individual character sketches.

Paper Making

Here's a comic book strip style picture about paper making. I did it for a friend studying fashion as she is going to print it onto fabric/paper and make clothes out of it. Should be cool, I'll post up her work when she's done it :)

Final images for the Narrative Unit

These are the final four images for the Narrative unit. For these I have made the models and cut out Stan and put him in them, then photographed them. So no Photoshop involved! Which I am quite pleased about :)

      

Narrative Unit

I have just handed in my work for the Narrative Unit. For this unit we had to choose a text, take the main theme of the text and retell it through a different narrative. I chose The Book of Eli, which is about a man who travels across America to take a book somewhere. He loses it on the way but it doesn't matter as he can recite it all from memory.


I have taken the theme of going on a journey and made it into a children's book. It is about an alien who is on his way to his Granny's when he crash lands on earth. It is about his journey to get back to his Granny's. He's called Stan.


To make the pictures, I have made the models myself (eg. the mountain, desert, boulders) and then combined them with photography and hand drawn pictures.


I would put on the original storyboard but it is 20 images long! So here is the edited storyboard and then I'll put up the 4 final images.

Final images for Visual Explanation

Here are the final images from the Visual Explanation unit. I would have put them up earlier but I was sick of looking at them! Well, here they are now. As the phrase I was visually explaining was 'increasing tension between two or more people' I decided to make it a poster for The Jeremy Kyle show. I redid the Jeremy Kyle logo and put it on a billboard on Photoshop so you can get the idea. I prefer the bottom image but adding a third person into it made it work better within the context. I think adding the red colour also helps.
